Alanis Morissette - Singer, Songwriter

Alanis Morissette was born June 1st 1974 in Ottawa, Ontario Canada. With the money she earned while doing "You Can't Do That On Television", Alanis wrote her first song (at 9 years old) and put out a self-made record, "Fate Stay with Me".

When Alanis was a teenager, she made two pop records in Canada - "Alanis" and "Now Is The Time". "Alanis" went platinum in Canada and also won a Juno for Best New Female Artist of the year, which is amazing for a 16 year-old.

She moved to Los Angeles from Toronto when she was 20 years old. She met up and connected with producer Glen Ballard. After Guy Osery heard the song "Perfect" on the Demo tape, he knew he had to work with her; therefore, Alanis was signed to Maverick Records.

Alanis' first album with Maverick records - "Jagged Little Pill" came out on June 13th, 1995, and debuts at ..118. Maverick thought it would sell about 100,000 copies. Well, the album bypassed that number and went to sell 27 million copies world wide, and Alanis Morissette became the biggest female rock star in the world. In 1996, Jagged Little Pill won 4 Grammys and many other world awards.

In 1997, after touring for almost 2 years, Alanis decided to take a break from touring and does not want to make music again. After going to Cuba - to a humanitarian mission, she finds herself loving music all over again, and hence finds her way back to the studio.

In 1998, Alanis is approached to do a song for a movie called "City Of Angels". The song "Uninvited" becomes a major hit and wins 2 Grammy's.

Alanis' second album with Maverick records: "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" came out on November 5th, 1998. Both Alanis and Glen Ballard produced the album. Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie went on to sell a respectable 7 million copies worldwide and debuts at ..1 with over 400,000 copies in the first week alone, and was still a major force with a sold out tour worldwide. This album is still a major seller with the hit song "Thank U".

In 1999 Alanis played God and wrote a song called "Still" for the Kevin Smith film "Dogma". She also appears in an episode of "Sex and the City". Alanis also did an MTV special called "MTV Unplugged" which was released on November 23rd, 1999. The album sold 5 million copies.

Alanis entered the studio agan in 2000 to record her third album with Maverick records. This album was produced and written by Alanis Morissette. The album: "Under Rug Swept" came out on February 26th, 2002. "Hands Clean was the first single off the album. Under Rug Swept debuts at ..1 again with over 200,000 copies sold the first week in the United States. This album sold around 5 million copies worldwide, and Alanis did a modest tour for the record.

In 2002 she put out her second DVD: "
Feast On Scraps" which also came with a bonus cd of songs that didn't make Under Rug Swept.

"So-Called Chaos" debuts worldwide on May 18th, 2005. The first single "Everything" went to the ..5 spot on the Billboard charts, however the second single, "8 Easy Steps" fails on the charts. This song was later remixed and did have success on the dance charts.

In the summer of 2004, Alanis does a co-headlining tour with her friends, Barenaked Ladies. She also did a cameo in the movie "De-Lovely" starring Ashley Judd and Kevin Klein, she also sung the Cole Porter song - "Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love" for the movie. Alanis appeared in the Canadian teen drama "Degrassi" as well as "American Dreams", singing her song "Offer".

Alanis decided to re-release Jagged Little Pill in 2005 - to mark the 10 year anniversary of the album. She and Glen Ballard reunited, and re-recorded the songs accoustically. On June 13, 2005 (which was exactly 10 years ago that date that the original Jagged Little Pill album came out), "Jagged Little Pill Acoustic" was released, with a slight catch...Alanis had signed a deal allowing the coffee chain Starbucks to sell the record exclusively for the first 6 weeks of its release, following with a worldwide release after the 6 weeks were up.

To celebrate the release of the album, Alanis goes on a Jagged Little Pill Acoustic tour. The tour is mainly performed in small theaters and she performed every song on Jagged Little Pill, along with a few songs that are on her other albums. Alanis was selling out most of the theaters, the tour was a major success.

On November 15th, 2005, Alanis puts out another CD "The Collection". This album features all of her hits from the past 10 years along with some of her favorite songs. She also does a GAP ad campaign in which she covers Seal's song "Crazy". This single holds strong, and The Collection is still selling very well. In December, a limited version of The Collection came out. This limited edition features a bonus DVD which is a documentary of Alanis' career along with clips of songs sung live from numerous eras.
